Medium to medium-dark ruby; attractive, intense, toasty, spicy, ripe black cherry and blackberry fruit aroma with notes of vanilla and hints of cocoa, mint and a slightly herbaceous note; full body; big, overtones of creamy oak; full tannin; lingering aftertaste. Should continue to develop with a few more years of bottle aging.

Those who demand prettiness and polish in their Merlots may well be a bit disappointed with this slightly rugged and solidly built effort, but, as is often the case with mountain- grown wines, there is no want for muscle and mass here. Long on concentrated, ripe-cherry fruit and infused with a wealth of wonderfully rich oak, this one certainly swaggers a bit but has the depth to go with its obvious exuberance. It deserves to be held for another three to five years.

Wine Tasting Notes
After 24 months, Cabernet-like tannins in the Howell Mountain Merlot had enough time to soften, and that clove, cinnamon stick, and sweet spice aromas and flavors from the barrels had integrated well with the sweet black plum, blackberry, light orange rind, cocoa and minty characteristics from the grapes. Ed also chose to add almost 4 percent Cabernet Franc to the blend to bring a black cherry accent to the nose and elongate the finish.
