Wine Advocate Review Rated 93 I reviewed these Locations offerings from Dave Phinney of Orin-Swift Cellars last year, who is going against all conventional wisdom of vineyard and vintage dating wines. Terroirists will claim the devil has possessed Phinney, as his offerings from France, Italy and Spain are all blends from different sectors of each country. If you judge wines on how they taste and the degree of pleasure they offer, they are all incredible efforts. The three new cuvees I tasted are among the finest wine values one could hope to find. Moreover, there are 50,000 cases of each, no easy feat given the grapes Phinney has accessed and the quality he has turned out. As of now, Dave Phinney might be my value winemaker of the year candidate. P.S. It's too expensive for this report, but I am including it as an hommage to what Dave Phinney has achieved. If there are better wines for under $20 a bottle in the world today, please share that information with The Wine Advocate.
Wine Tasting Notes A blend of Grenache/Garnacha, Tempranillo, and Carignan/Carinena.The wine has a vibrant ruby color with a scarlet band on the rim. Decanting awakens the aromas - a blend of ripe boysenberry, stone fruit, warm spice, and a hint of oak. A rich entry leads to a robust and savory mid palette that is intense and concentrated with a persistent finish of ripe, soft tannins. Extremely well balanced with proper weight and structure, the wine is ready to drink now.
Locations is a simple concept made complicated that ultimately became a great deal of fun.
The Simple: Make the best possible wine from a given country or location. The Complicated: Going out and tracking down the vineyards which are capable of delivering the quality of wine needed. The Fun: Travelling the world to visit incredible sites and meet amazing people that challenge each other to make the best wine possible.
