NOTHING MORE EXCELLENT NOR MORE VALUABLE THAN WINE WAS EVER GRANTED MANKIND BY GOD - PLATO (429-347 B.C.)

Ehlers Estate

Ehlers Estate's Vineyards are farmed biodynamically by Winemaker and Vineyard Manager Rudy Zuidema. The biodynamic farming system was conceived by Rudolf Steiner, an Austrian scientist and philosopher, who recognized the nutritional depletion of soils, and loss of quality in produce and livestock on farms that introduced chemicals and synthetic fertilizers at the turn of the century. This was the first farming system that offered a holistic, grassroots alternative to industrialized agriculture.

Biodynamics considers the forces, rhythms, and impulses of the entire universe. Just as plants depend on the day and night cycle of the sun, there are many other important impulses in the cosmos that affect the outcome of a living organism. The goal of the practice is to achieve a balance between the physical and non-physical realms of our universe.

The forces of the sun, moon, planets, and stars have been reaching earth in regular rhythms since the beginning of time. Understanding these rhythms helps us to time our farming practices to harness their forces. They occur daily, weekly, monthly and annually.

The Cabernet Sauvignon 1886 is our flagship wine. Each vintage, we craft the bottling of this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon by choosing the vineyard blocks that best express the flavor profile of the Estate. The 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon 1886 is seductive, with a rich, supple texture and concentrated black cherry, mocha and plum flavors. The finish is a complex layering of currant, earthy spice and leather that lingers along with the lusurious, fine tannins.
