NOTHING MORE EXCELLENT NOR MORE VALUABLE THAN WINE WAS EVER GRANTED MANKIND BY GOD - PLATO (429-347 B.C.)

Turnbull Wine Cellars

The Turnbull name goes back to the early 1300's when a court member of Robert the Bruce saved the king’s life by turning away a ferocious bull - which had threatened to gore the king. The grateful king dubbed his subject “Turnbull” and awarded him a crest featuring a bull’s head twisted back, with the motto: Audaci Favet Fortuna, or “Fortune Favors the Bold.”

In the spring of 1993, Patrick O’Dell purchased the winery named Johnson Turnbull Vineyards and renamed the property Turnbull Wine Cellars. At this time the image of the turning bull on the label was redesigned. The newer image is derived from a bull’s figure on a Minoan drinking vessel. The crest continues to be embossed on each label, reflecting our respect for the history of the distinguished Turnbull name.

Since then, Patrick has increased Turnbull's vineyard holdings within the Oakville appellation from 21 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon to an impressive 185 acres planted to several varietals. Our four Oakville vineyards, in the heart of the Napa Valley, vary in soil character from deeper alluvial soils on the valley floor, to the shallow, volcanic and rocky soils of the hillsides.

Our Weitz vineyard on Oakville’s volcanic eastern slope comprises some of Napa’s very finest Cabernet ground, bar none. Any wonder then that this wine would arise from such a dramatic site? Availing ourselves of the opportunity to blend Bordeaux varieties for elegance and structure, we look anew at each vintage for the cuvee that most clearly reflects the special nature of this superb terroir. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec all cling defiantly to these rocky slopes, mining up the experience of the ancient earth below.
