NOTHING MORE EXCELLENT NOR MORE VALUABLE THAN WINE WAS EVER GRANTED MANKIND BY GOD - PLATO (429-347 B.C.)

Altamura Winery

Altamura Vineyards and Winery, established in 1985 by Frank and Karen Altamura, is the only winery located in Wooden Valley. Stag's Leap Winery, Pahlmeyer and Caymus purchase grapes from this area, which is within the Napa Valley appellation, yet Altamura is the first to capture Wooden Valley's special characteristics in a bottling. Napa Valley natives Frank and Karen have a decidedly hands-on approach to every step of the growing and winemaking process. Thus, a natural production limit is established and the wines reflect the Altamura's deep commitment to reflecting the terroir of their Wooden Valley Ranch.

Wooden Valley is a small, almost round valley, approximately two miles wide at its widest point and located 9 miles northeast of the town of Napa within the Napa Valley appellation. Formed by volcanic activity, Wooden Valley boasts a number of soil types and a rolling topography.

In 1985, the Altamuras began planting 65 acres of their 400 acre ranch to vineyards with a clear emphasis on Cabernet Sauvignon. The five main soil types on the Ranch lay the foundation for six distinctive Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards varying in texture and flavor profiles all of which are blended into one wine. Also planted are Sangiovese, Nebbiolo and Sauvignon Blanc in optimal soils for each varietal.

An exacting, no compromise policy in the vineyard each year where up to half of the crop is dropped to the ground produces focused, concentrated fruit flavors and an enriched texture. Using only free run juice gives Altamura wines the purest expression of both the varietal and the vintage. It is a long term approach that Altamura fans can count on vintage after vintage.
